The Invention of Noveldram as Art of Literature: Complete Research Article

This study was conducted in the author's house and Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, Nigeria. A questionnaire was issued for data collection and the data collected were analysed in Microsoft Excel. Figures and tables were used to present graphical and visual representation of the found results. You will find the sample questionnaire in the appendices section as appendix A and B. The findings showed that majority of the respondents acceded to the positive influence of reading on academic performance. One thousand and twenty (1020) questionnaire were distributed on FUNAAB campus but 98.0% of them were filled and returned. 91.8% of respondents never read literary works for an academic session while 72.0% of respondents only read to pass examination. The study confirmed that literary works were not as engaging and entertaining as visually interactive adventures, amidst other discouraging factors revealed by the reading test, such as;1.Difficulties in comprehending or in shuttling between dictionary and the read literary works to unveil the underlying meaning of grammar used.2.Change in pattern of write ups, such as list-conversation pattern as mostly found in drama and prose3.Accentuation of sentences, clauses, phrases or words and sententious nature inherent in literary works.The study therefore recommended, among others, that literary works should be embellished with movie-related effects such as slow-motion, fast-motion, suspense, action-visualizers like summersaulting, dodging, stunt, etc., if it were to be action packed write-up and nourished with horizontal conversation pattern to enable readers continue at the same pace with which they started the reading, even though the writings have taken a new turn into interactive word-exchange pattern from the preceded narrative pattern, the grammatical usage in literary works should portray contextual meaning to retain readers on the literary works in order to avoid the constant visitation into dictionary to unveil the underlying meaning, cogent and minimal accentuation must be used where it is indispensable to avoid boredom that could emanate from such intricate nature. It proffers solutions to major three (3) areas that diminish keen interest of the potential readers of literary works, thus imposing discouragement syndrome as a result of; 1. Conversational list-pattern of character's interaction, 2. Sententious and undue intricate network of grammar usage and 3. Iteration of phrases, clauses and sentences for emphasis purpose.
