Ryan Kelty has been ripped away from his old life and living a secret existence deeply embedded in the global criminal underworld. In his new profession, he is tasked with going abroad in search of an African warlord, one responsible for the heinous crimes committed in the backdrop of a Civil War. But Ryan's search for this individual proves harder than expected and the quest leads him to other countries and cultures.

At the same time, Ryan is still dealing with the tragic murder of his best friend several years earlier and is now given more devastating news from back home. The fresh grief he now deals with combined with the depressing tales of war survivors he encounters along his way drive Ryan into a mental state lower than any he has ever experienced before, diminishing his ability to fulfill his mission. Going along as best he can, Ryan begins to discover a new criminal racket, one that brings a whole new set of dangers to his work. The closer he gets to his target and the more he discovers about this new criminal activity, the more he is reminded of the tragedies earlier in his life. This sends Ryan into a downward spiral, leaving him vulnerable to the new enemies he has made for himself.
