After the Second World War there was a need to rebuild and develop education across a whole spectrum of activities. 'Once upon a time' is an attempt to capture the work that happened in a sparsely populated part of Northern England. This work continued unabated for more than thirty years but came to a rapid halt with the introduction of the National Curriculum. That reform removed much of the responsibility for change and development from the hands of the various 'local' authorities placing it firmly into the hands of the Department in London. The authors make no judgments as to whether the earlier system was better or worse than what followed, rather they felt a need to record the system of local development and local initiatives, their loose ties with Her Majesty's Inspectorate and National development overseen by the Schools Council. The system had imperfections and drawbacks but the teachers involved had ownership, commitment and dedication. We felt the need to make some of this available to a wider public before it becomes lost in the mists of time.
