In need of a Friend

As surgeon to the King of England and newly married, life in Oxford could not be better for Mathew Fletcher. Only, beyond the city walls civil war is tearing the country apart. The Queen is on her way back from Holland with three shiploads of weapons for her husband. A French Emissary and his aide are in Oxford seeking a trade deal in exchange for troops to help the King win the war. However, in the streets of Oxford murderers flourish during times of confusion and Oxford has spawned one of the worst. Mathew is brought in to discover the murderer of a nobleman's daughter, but while he is distracted by one case of murder, he is accused of another. Seeking help from friend and foe alike to save himself from the gallows, Mathew joins an ill-equipped army, sent on a hasty mission to relieve a besieged town. Family, friends, international politics, civil war and murder all merge to remind Mathew that tomorrow things can get worse.
