Don Juan ' Tis strange - but true; for truth is always strange; Stranger than fiction; if it could be told, How much would novels gain by the exchange!' Lord Byron, 1823 An incredible and unbelievable account of the wartime experiences of a compassionate eighteen-year-old who as a conscientious objector took a path into the unknown. From the depths of despair came a story of love with an ex-enemy, a refugee from Danzig. This is a true story of Allan Page who was born in 1921 in a home that was built fit for heroes in Kettering, Northamptonshire. Holding firm Christian views, Allan chose not to take up arms and followed his life's path as a pacifist and conscientious objector. This story tells of the terrors of war that he experienced as well as light-hearted episodes during those dark years and after. An account is given of a possible conspiracy involving Allan, the Duke of Bedford and Rudolf Hess. Whilst in Belgium, Allan was mistaken for a member of the SS and came close to being shot. His voluntary relief work in London during the Blitz, Birmingham and finally, Antwerp, during heavy bombing is described. In Antwerp on VE Day he made the decision to continue service with the International Voluntary Service for Peace in Germany. Whilst in Flensburg he met and married Ilse an ex-enemy, a refugee from Danzig, whose story is also told. Adventure and a zest for excitement continued throughout Allan's life. Following redundancy, he turned his attention to voluntary work in Kettering until his death when his funeral was an unconventional one for this unconventional man.
