Can Humans Change?: A Frank Discussion of our Past, Present, and Future

Many of us believe the problems of today are caused by fossil-fuel special interests, white supremacy, religious terrorism, ignorant and corrupt governments, greedy economics, and unfeeling corporations. And they are. But there are reasons why these people and institutions act as they do, and if we don't deal with these reasons, alienation and violence will never go away. Many of us will not want to admit that these reasons, these even more primary causes, have to do with religion, overpopulation, social hierarchy, militarism, and technopoly. But even these underlying institutions and beliefs have more fundamental causes: engrained worldview beliefs in absolute dualism (sacred/profane reality), mentalism (minds and mental states), and human attitudes of superiority and independence--beliefs that have alienated human consciousness and dealth the living planet a strong blow. So this book will explore our longest and deepest (and I believe "false") worldview and the reverberations of its damage up through the levels of human social organization. Without giving up the good fight against bad people and bad institutions, we also have to--most urgently--investigate and go after the deepest causes of our human alienation.
