Bethany idolizes her dad, a third-generation baker. She wants nothing more than for him to bake at the governor general's wedding. After all, it would be the biggest event he's ever baked for. Better still, he'd be recognized across their entire Caribbean island and written about in their national newspaper. When a less experienced baker is chosen for the job, Bethany is devastated. All she can think about at this point is her dad's hurt feelings, even though he says he's delighted for his rival. Bethany is convinced he's hurting inside is trying to put on a strong face, which becomes even clearer when he burns dinner. She vows to do everything she possibly can to promote his amazing baking skills. She takes a cake made by both of them to the rival bakery with the idea of sharing it with his staff so that they can compare what they do with what her dad does. She's sure they'll agree that her dad is the best baker. When she gets there, her dad's rival is still mixing the cake batter. Amazingly, he's glad she came.
