Pictures Out There!

"We choose to go to the moon in this decade...", "I have a dream...", Why do we remember these words so well? And why do they resonate with so many of us, still today? A common thread is that they each 'paint' a Picture of a future of possibilities and hope that visualizes a promising tomorrow, and Inspires each of us to take Action! "Pictures Out There!" describes the too-often neglected opportunity that we have as individuals and as humanity every day to create Pictures of the future that inspire us to act, individually and together, toward a better world. In this ever-accelerating world we live in, the ability to always have clear Pictures of our desired future is a compass and motivator toward the happiness and success of every individual and every community, at every level. The concept of Pictures is introduced as part of a new "3 P's and an I" approach to vision and action toward a better future that includes Pictures, Perspectives, Process, and Ideals. "Pictures" are vivid descriptions of the future we create that serve as the springboard and motivation for change. As examples, I present eight (8) of my own Pictures of a better future on these important global social issues: - money and materialism- religion and spirituality- our bodies and physical selves- artificial intelligence- reducing violence- the future of government- language opportunities- clean water and air. Along with my Pictures, I suggest the much larger opportunity for any individual or group to create their own Pictures, acting on their dreams and desires for a better future. Secondly, we move to the concept of Perspectives. These are critical ways we view the world that significantly influence our opinions, beliefs, and our Pictures. The Perspectives that I describe and share are: - Connection and Community - who do we include in our social connections and community of caring?- Widening and Narrowing - is our social world expanding or narrowing over time?- Moderation and Extremes - are we moderate or extreme in our social beliefs? I encourage the sharing of our personal Perspectives within these concepts to gain insights on the sources and motivations for our Pictures, and to create common understanding with one another. With our Pictures drawn and shared, and our Perspectives shared and understood, we then move to Process where we draw a path forward and map our next steps of action toward a better future. And lastly, we address the need for Ideals. Some examples I provide are: - Help - how much do we value giving and receiving help from others? - Common Uniqueness - how much do we value our own unique individuality plus what we have in common with all people, versus how much we value our alignments with exclusive social groups? - Love First - what is the opportunity for much of our global community to agree on Love First as an overarching spiritual ideal? In the book's conclusion, I ask "So?" "So What?" "What difference will it make?" "Why do it?". I truly believe that if we create clear Pictures of our desired Future on issues that matter to us, then the world will become a better place. With Pictures as the first step in describing our desired Future and understanding one another's Perspectives, any individual or group can quickly and effectively decide on what they want for a better future, and then more efficiently and effectively figure out how to get there!
