In April of 1961, he participated in the Bay of Pigs Invasion as a frogman, was wounded and captured, and spent one year in prison. He was Chair of the Foreign Language Department at ETSU (1973-1993). In 1985 he became the first Cuban American President of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. In 1990 he was co-founder of the National Association of Cuban American Educators. Zayas-Baz?n is co-author and co-editor of nineteen books, among them his popular textbooks Arriba!, Conexiones, and Fusi?n. He is also the co-author of a historical novel, "El pez volador", and its original English version, "The Flying Fish".
