Socrates Papas is the sports editor for the Toronto Beacon newspaper. He attends the annual Standardbred yearling auction and decides to follow the careers of three of the yearling racehorses. His father, Demetrius, a big horse racing fan, has suspicions that two of the horses are not who they appear to be. The owners are as different as their horses; one is rich, another owns a breeding farm and the third one is a farmer whose family have a long history in the sport. Socrates enlists the assistance of his father and his wife, Angelika, to investigate the claims. They must contend with lies, falsified records and even death threats in their quest to uncover the truth. Their discoveries of fraud become sensational news and impact the lives of the owners, their horses and the racing industry.
