Some of the stories are serious. All reflect the upbringing and value systems of small-town America in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.

Rather the book is full of stories of another era: an era when America was free; an era when political correctness was unheard of and wouldn't have been accepted anyway; an era when folks were expected to be responsible for themselves and to raise their children to be responsible adults too; and an era when folks earned what they had, didn't whine for the government to give them things.
