Australian Army History: Living In The British Empire

From the late 1700s until the end of the 19th Century, the British Empire established, expanded, and maintained many colonies on the continent of Australia. These colonies included New South Wales, Van Diemen's Land, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, and Queensland.

British Marines arrived in Australia with the First Fleet in 1788. They were relieved 1790-1792 by the New South Wales Corps. In due course, many infantry regiments served in Australia. Some Artillery Units and miscellaneous units served too. Other Marines served later from time to time. 32,000 British Soldiers and Marines served in Australia. About 10,000 Soldiers and Marines remained in Australia on discharge. Hundreds lost their lives protecting communities against the indigenous defenders of their lands and marauding bushrangers. They founded the Australian Police Forces, built communities, started the Australian Railways, and built the most challenging roads. They left behind in Australia 30,000 first-generation Australians. This book sets out to explain who and what the British Army in Australia was about.
