Pilgrim's Progress in Verse: A Spiritual Journey

The Pilgrim's Progress is a Christian allegory of the spiritual life written by John Bunyan. First published in 1678, it was soon translated into dozens of languages, and its influence spread far and wide throughout Christendom. In the Pilgrim's Progress, Christian is the "everyman" who lives in the world and receives a call from God. Christian is compelled to tread the path leading to salvation: dramatically freed from his bondage to sin by the death of Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary.
As we would expect in allegorical writing, the people Christian meets are personifications of vices and virtues. They speak completely in character, and we see Christian himself responding with growing insight and confidence as he progresses on his pilgrimage. Towns and place-names are allegorised in the same manner: allowing Bunyan to add short explanations and commentary to provide extra depth to the narrative.
