Pernell is a young country boy from the parish of Clarendon, Jamaica. He is admired by many, particularly for his creative ability and flair. However, Pernell still has to overcome the drawbacks and discouragement presented by others who don't see him as living up to their perception or expectation of someone worthy of affection.

Pernell's strength and resilience are the attributes on which, at times, he has to draw in order to overcome adversity. Even at a relatively young age he is mindful that negativity is a barrier he has to guard against. Pernell has great ambition, and despite the negative encounters and even near-death experience he has to contend with, he always manages to find inner strength. Thankfully, he has a range of activities to keep him focused, so he finds himself continually engaged without being distracted.

As Pernell makes the transition in his mid-teens to a contrasting urban lifestyle in Manchester, England, he is faced with further challenges. He recognises the need to adjust and adopt new habits. It becomes increasingly apparent that the road to progress isn't about familiarity, but about the need to do what so many before him have had to do, and that is to scale the numerous obstacles along the way.
