Patrick N. Mot - a thirteen year old seventh grader with an over active imagination living under the warmth of both parents is plunged into reality when his mother dies, and not so long subsequent to her diagnosis at the local children's hospital where she worked as a nurse.
Just towards the end of the year that saw the passing of a mother, a wife, and the most decorated nurse Roseville has ever had, the father disappears without a trace, leaving young Patrick to deal with reality all by his lonesome self. But the youngster had a different plan of action; instead of dealing with reality, he intended to defy it.
A week after the passing of his mother he had asked his questions to his Sciences teacher who played the role of mentor and friend. Patrick asked all there was to know about death till he ultimately decided that he did not want to suffer the same fate as everything else that is or once was alive.
He worked tirelessly in his mentor's house laboratory during that year of his seventh grade with hopes of finding a path to that grey area between life and death, a prolonged lifespan.
After taking refuge in his mentor's house who got arrested for tax evasions the youngster begins a rather solitary journey filled with blood spattering experiments trying to perfect one of the two procedures in his two self-formulated theories.
Patrick had everything planned out, every step mapped up, but that's not how life works. He never factored in falling in love or the risk that comes with it; the loss of those he held dear to himself just as his father had warned him.
The pressure to perfect his farfetched idea is elevated when he has to use it to save his mentor who has played the role of a father to him. And he would have no one else but the love of his life as he makes this desperate attempt to save Alfred's life...
