• The first part of the book sets the scene by exploring young children as learners in the classroom and how they learn languages. It describes characteristics of effective teachers, approaches to discipline and classroom management, and the influence of classroom physical environment on learning. It also provides guidance on successful lesson planning.
• The second part explores ways to teach the different skills and describes developmentally appropriate assessment strategies.
• The third part shows how to match principles of instructed second language teaching with instructional materials and how to teach very young children. It also provides a number of motivating games for language learning, as well as some practical suggestions on how to engage learners.

The book can be used in pre-service teacher education courses but can also be used for independent study. It provides discussion topics, reflective questions and assignments. All activities described can be carried out with limited resources but are also adaptable to smartboards and tablets.

Irma-Kaarina Ghosn holds a Doctorate in Applied Linguistics from University of Leicester and a Master's in Education from University of Virginia. She has authored books, book chapters and journal articles on children's language learning and has conducted over 1000 hours of teacher development workshops. She has also authored primary school language teaching materials and received the Mary Finocchiaro Award of Excellence in the Development of Pedagogical Materials from TESOL.
