The "Osu" caste system is a traditional social hierarchy found among the Igbo people in Nigeria, particularly in the southeastern region known as Igboland. The term "Osu" refers to individuals or families historically deemed as "outcasts" or "untouchables" within the Igbo society.
This caste system is deeply rooted in ancient Igbo beliefs and practices, where certain individuals or families were segregated and considered spiritually polluted due to perceived offenses or circumstances. The reasons for being designated as an "Osu" vary, including engaging in activities deemed taboo or being descendants of slaves.
Over time, efforts have been made to challenge and abolish this discriminatory system, as it is considered unjust and inconsistent with modern principles of equality and human rights. Various Igbo communities have taken steps to eliminate the stigma associated with the "Osu" caste system, advocating for equal treatment and opportunities for all members of society.
Thus the book "The Freeborn Slaves: A Fight For Freedom" is an attempt to criticize and correct this anomaly and injustice.

In the village of Owere, the "Osu" caste system caused discrimination, deprivation, and severe inhumane treatment for some people in the village. The suffering was unbearable, to the point that the "Osu" were not allowed to go to the river or even see the "sacred" carnivals of the revered village masquerades and their followers performing during the festivities because they consider the eyes of the "Osu" people unclean and unworthy to see sacred things.
From using service and charity to applying violence for violence, to using what they call peaceful violence, one family endured severe personal losses for three generations fighting to liberate the village's "Osu" faction and unite the two sides.
