Karamo was born and raised in the Gambia and did his first eight years of schooling there. He couldn't finish his high school education due to financial circumstances. Karamo went through so many difficulties getting an education. He started with an Arabic education for a few years, and his madrasa teacher, also his uncle, passed away two years into his Arabic education while studying Arabic in Kunkuba.
Due to his teacher's frequent trips to the capital city, Karamo is not only denied the Arabic education his parents so desperately wanted for him while studying the language in Kunkuba, but he also suffers at the hands of his teacher's first wife.
The stakes have never been higher. Living in the village without a big brother and parents to look after him, Karamo faces bullying from other boys in the community. Karamo can protect himself from the bullies in the village thanks to the little karate skills he possessed.
In his aunt's apartment, Karamo was forbidden the use of a mosquito net, and his aunt failed to attend to the wound on his leg until it became infected. Every night, Karamo cried until a neighbor intervened.
