I was inspired to write this book because I believe that young men in Jamaica have a bright future, but that crime and violence have prevented them from realizing their potential to live productive and meaningful lives. Education, training, and social mobility afford inmates the opportunity to become law abiding citizens who live productive lives, allowing them to return to a normal life in society. A number of offenders are illiterate and, as a result, are unable to find suitable employment in times of need; this circumstance compels them to return to crime and violence. This book discusses the transformation of inmates in other countries through education and training provided by correctional education. The introduction of correctional education through rehabilitation programs in correctional facilities is vital. The goal of rehabilitation in correctional facilities is to equip inmates with the knowledge and skills necessary to increase their employability and enhance their social and economic well-being. In addition, it provides offenders with a sense of belonging and self-worth upon completion of their sentences. Inmates who do not receive education and training in correctional facilities will not undergo the necessary transformation and will continue to live in poverty, preventing them from achieving their life objectives. They will be compelled to return to continue illicit activity in their communities due to their inability to secure employment due to a lack of training and education.
