Got Trauma! After more than four decades, Robert Kintigh knows a thing or two about dealing with trauma, but not in the traditional sense. Sure, this story is full of the typical alcoholic father, broken home, and broken bones, but the endurance in Robert has to be admired. What stands out even bigger is how he has been able to turn the worst situations around, and come out the other end with such success it is mind blowing. Let me tell you some more so maybe you can appreciate what people have said who have had a sneak peek of the book prior to its release.
Robert grew up in Southeast Los Angeles, and he was born into a typical middle class family in LA in the 1970's. What wasn't so typical was what he had to fight through starting at the age of four as his father was an alcoholic, and was heading into a streak of check writing fraud of 1000's of dollars, family destruction, adultery, and heart-break for his mother who never deserved his father's lack of loyalty. So, then it began, and by second grade Robert was running some very tough streets after his mother left his father out of life or death choices. His mother took him, and his brother, and moved far away before their father had a chance to cause even more harm including killing them.
Robert became a latch key child out of necessity as his mother in order to make ends meet had to hold down two jobs. Robert's brother stayed home, and Robert went out into the world to try, and figure out what he could make of himself. The divorce, and lack of father in his life really caused him some issues that he had to figure out how to work out. This is where the story gets interesting because by fifth grade Robert endured broken bones, five concussions by fifth grade, dozens of stitches and a whole lot more than you can imagine. Why this story is unique is because
I'm Failing Forward started out in second grade and became perfected by high school to adulthood.
What is
I'm Failing Forward all about? This book is about how Robert learned to dig in when everything was going bad, and I mean the worst situations you can think of. Robert has a way of turning bad things on its head, and he makes goodness out of most of it. In the book he talks about his PTSD, his own dealings with infidelity with his ex-wife, the loss of a leg, a felony and so much more. His successes in life could be talked about with great admiration, but that is not where the celebration should be placed. It is the way he leans in, and believes so much in to his
Five F's. They are
Fail, Faith, Focus, Freedom, and Future. What they mean is a long story, but what can be told is it takes anybody's trauma, and delivers it in a whole new direction.
"I was a poor kid from South-east Los Angeles who came from a rough and tumble beginning, and I was just determined to make something great out of my life. All though it has definitely not been ideal it has been an amazing ride so far. I can't imagine my life before I learned to face my failures, and then decide I was not going to only be defined by them. God has a higher purpose for me. I am not sure yet what that totally is, but this book(and many others) is just one gift to this world I hope.
I am a failure, and I am proud of it, and I want you to be a proud failure too because through adversity comes some brilliant lessons. Never let anyone shame you, or steal your light because everyone fails.
I'm Failing Forward is here to change how you perceive things. My story sometimes seems hard to believe even to me but I have laid out everything as clear as I could and as honest as I could to deliver hope, leadership, faith, education and most important a brutal honesty lacking in this world.
