In 1860 Bartholomew Deets convinced his wife Anneke that the land of opportunity was the United States. She was not overjoyed at the prospects of just Picking up and moving to a foreign land.
Despite her initial opposition she finally agreed and over the course of the next year the Deets family packed up everything of value and set sail for America. The voyage was arduous at best, but the Deets family had sacrificed everything in an effort to improve their lives.

Despite the hardships of crossing the world's oceans to reach the 'promise land' 'Bart' was convinced that despite a Civil War, and a land that was supposedly inhabited by blood thirsty Indians, that he would somehow find a way to 'make a living'. He hoped for a boy and was thrilled to see his son born just two months after reaching New York City.
This is the story about how his son became a conservationist who struggled to change his own wasteful attitude about the slaughter of the American Buffalo.
