This is a mid 18th century French version of the well known allegorical story of the Little Peasant or Lesser Countryman, issued in German in 1731 a decade or so earlier. Here the seeker of the Philosophers' Stone is instructed by a peasant he meets while out walking. Much of the account focusses on the red and a white flower.
