Momento is 60cm tall who has the head of a West Australian marsupial Quokka with a furry human shaped body. He is able to converse with both humans and bush animals.
The Ronsons, a human family, who live in the Perth suburb of Dianella, befriend him through their twelve-year-old eldest daughter, Rhonda. Momento warns them of impending danger from the Giant Egrets who live on the nearby lakes in the national park which is situated at the rear of the Ronsons property. After various actions take place, Momento saves the family.
With the help of the Ronson family friends, the Dickson's, they are all ferried to Rottnest Island, twenty-kilometres off the coast from the port of Fremantle in Western Australia, in their motor launch, to where Momento rekindles love with his sweetheart named Lavishly. They marry and live with the Ronsons. Many adventures occur involving Ebony and Odette the black swans, the egrets Ego and Beaky with wives Silky and Plumage, along with Louie the python, Bouncy and Babsey the kookaburras, Koco and Fruitful the koalas and soon to be their astronaut co-passengers, Walter and Whalan the wallabies.
Park Ranger Donaldson becomes personally involved and enthusiastically is part of the secret, through he and Momento saving Whalan the Wallaby's life. The youngest Ronson daughter, ten-year-old Colleen, tells her teacher what elder sister Rhonda has said about this Momento which brings about surprising consequences.
Scientists have discovered a new planet which has been sighted way beyond Mars and Lieutenants Sally Sawyer and Arlo Goodes put an official government proposition to Momento and friends which they accept. With Sally and Arlo as the space ship pilots, they launch-off in their spaceship, especially named EgoEgret-One, towards this new planet named Kaplan which may have an atmosphere and be habitable like Earth. This planet had previously gone undetected as it's situated directly behind Mars which kept it hidden from normal telescopes. Sudden dangers are encountered on their long and arduous journey.
After almost twelve months of space travel planet Kaplan is sighted. Drama and anticipation occurs as Lieutenant Arlo searches for a landing sight.
