The WAY We Work with Mustangs (and Horses)

I cannot reinvent the wheel of horse training. What I can do is offer an alternative to traditional horse training frequently referred to as Training by Submission. Training by Submission utilizes Pressure and Release, Approach and Retreat and Direct Pressure as the means to have the mustang submit to the goals and desired results of the trainer. Typical Pressure and Release techniques have their place in training, just not the PRIMARY means in The WAY.

The WAY is about Training by Understanding, that is, us understanding the mustang and the mustang understanding us. It is about being PATIENT enough with the mustang to "See what they see, think what they are thinking and you will "have" the horse." A saying given to me by my Uncle Albert White Horse.

Throughout the book I interchange "mustang" and "horse" as there are many commonalities between the two. However, make no mistake they are different in so many ways that we can be caught off guard and find ourselves asking the question "What now?" with the mustang. One thing is for sure.....The mustang will always be wild. There will be that wild in them in some form. How do we keep it in check, keep it from surfacing? The answer is to bury it so deep by offering something far better than anything the mustang could find in the wild.

Two Rules, four Words, are the guidelines to The WAY that lead to a communication, a language between horse and trainer. Working through the relationship, the mustang teaches us as much as we teach them. Going from TOLERANCE to ACCEPTANCE and moving to the ultimate goal of TRUST is the journey.....and at the end of each session, we find ourselves saying...."What fun!".
