He had opposed Adolf Hitler openly and -first lost his job at the University of Vienna and then was sent to Russia. Miraculously he survived Stalingrad and - five years in Russian Prison Camps. Elizabeth, her sister, and Mother spent most of the War in small villages to get away from the constant bombing raids on the big cities. After the War she could go back to Vienna and attend high school there. During the 6th grade of high school, she received an AFS Scholarship to the USA and spent one year in Erie, Pennsylvania, with an American family. After graduating from Medical School, she did a residency in Pathology. As a result of some lucky circumstances, she was invited by Stanford University, CA, on a fellowship in Pathology. She fell in love with California and decided to stay there, she continued her residency at the Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. After she could afford to buy a nice house in Los Angeles, she brought her three children to America.
