Black Excellence defined by Maham the Mentor is the Excellence of Black People in America. That Excellence comes from extraordinary Black People, who accomplished great tasks or Goals, under the most extreme conditions to mankind. Black History is very important to me because I am a direct descendant of it. Most of my life, I thought my life was difficult and it may have been for me, in my mind. I could easily allow myself to believe I was this fragile, I thought I couldn't bare the treatment I received. Then I learned about Frederick Douglass and George Washington Carver, I shut up, immediately!! How dare I complain about my treatment when these great men were treated so inhumanely. My father was murdered before I was born, my mother passed away five months after I was born. I went through foster care, I was adopted, I was in Special Education by the Eighth grade. I made many mistakes which led me to prison while I was still attending High School. I was 18 years old. I couldn't read until I was 22, which brings me to meetings these ancestors through literature. Through literature I was able to see how fortunate I was to be born in this day in time, instead of the 1700 or 1800s. I was able to see through reading, how difficult life was for them, what our ancestors really went through. How some of them contributed and never received any recognition for it? Only through over reading about a subject do I feel comfortable talking about it, if I don't really know too much about it, I'm not even going to speak on it. These people that I wrote about in this book I have research them on numerous occasions or read about them when I was passing time. They helped me go from special education to graduating college with honors twice. Black Excellence highlights the amazing contributions of Black Americans, I selected the ones I believe should be known or mentioned. I would encourage anyone who doesn't like my selection to write or organize your own book. I would love to read it. There are no finish lines to learning. We can all participate in the uplifting and strengthening of all people. With this book, I hope and pray that we remember who we are! What gave us strength. It was unity! Unity in love and principles. Going through history, breaking down these amazing Black Americans, our ancestors. I truly hope that this inspires them to do better, as it did me. Seeing the adversity some of these people in this book faced, can enlighten a young man that his life is way better than his ancestors and he should be grateful because without their contributions we could be in the same predicament.
