Cornstalkers is the first chapbook for 6-10 year-olds in the Recipe for Adventure series by Steve Burt, who is a 2004 Bram Stoker Award winner for Young Readers and 5-time Mom's Choice Award winner. After receiving a Recipe for Adventure kit in the mail while summering at Gram's house in rural Maine's farm country, siblings Krista and Layton and their grandmother encounter a living scarecrow who uses seven super-powered corn kernels to raise an army of cornstalk people. The Recipe kit gives them tools to help them take on the scarecrow and his followers. But taking them on may also mean helping them accomplish their goal.
