Born in Berryville, VA in 1885, received a BA from Howard University and an MA from Columbia University. Returning to Washington, DC to teach, she created the first junior high school for Black students. With eight others she founded the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha at Howard and became its first president. She won the American Tennis Association's first tournament and was the first Black athlete to win a major sports title, in 1917. In 1922 she became the first Dean of Women at Howard and was the first woman to serve as a dean at any American university. Slowe Hall on the Howard campus is named for her. Her longtime home, which she shared with her partner Mary P. Burrill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. In her words, Slowe strove for professional achievement and personal fulfillment" and succeeded, serving as an institution builder and model for Black women thereafter. Her Truth and Service, edited by Amy Yeboah Quarkume, collects the letters of Lucy Diggs Slowe. She was by all measures an extraordinary individual. With an introduction by the editor and seven chapters that focus on Slowe as a pioneering woman, an educator, Howard University Dean, social justice advocate, teacher of young women, critic of injustice, and a loving friend, Quarkume allows Slowe's words to speak for themselves. This is an important document of a significant figure in the development of Black focused institutions during the difficult Jim Crow era in the United States"--
