The bundle of letters tied around with a piece of ecru seam tape had been on the closet shelf for months waiting to be read and then possibly tossed, a part of the many letters my mother, Marge had accumulated during her 96 years. Dear Sis... then the next, Dear Sis...and the next, about 30 letters in all from her two brothers and my dad's two brothers, all written after they were inducted into military service and deployed between 1942-1946. The letters were written by ordinary young men who answered the call to duty and honor to protect their country and their families. Compiled into a narrative, the letters give a snapshot of life and events both on the war front and at home. These young men expressed gratitude for letters and packages sent from home. The emotions of missing family and the life left behind come through in the words they wrote as well as what they didn't say. They experienced the uncertainty of not knowing where in the world they would be next. While the story of one close knit family, this collection of letters provides a glimpse into the everyday life of soldiers and their families during a turbulent time in history.
