Navigating Non-Fiction

Under the new Common Core standards, teachers find themselves in a changing role-as a source of support, rather than simply a source of information, while students actively discover their world.

High-interest, nonfiction reading meets these new standards in more ways than one. Not only are students developing their literacy skills, they are learning about topics of interest through articles on fascinating discoveries, important moments in history, or their favorite entertainers.

As a resource for elementary school teachers, Navigating Non-Fiction provides a wide range of short articles and related questions that will stimulate young minds, prompt lively classroom discussions, and motivate further nonfiction reading down the line.

Elena Katzeff and Janet Lipson are experienced reading and language arts educators who have developed and facilitated gifted and enrichment programs. Their experiences include teaching students in New York City public schools, as well as private schools in Westchester County.
