Black Consciousness Awakening is my life's journey through poetry. It is a compilation of my thoughts, reactions, observations, and emotional responses to my religious and philosophical studies, while a student in The Nation of Islam, under the leadership of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan.
When I first heard the teachings of
The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad in 1980, I heard it through his student, The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. My first Saviours' Day (the annual Nation of Islam Muslim holiday observed on February 26) was in February of 1981. Shortly thereafter, all of the poems I wrote was inspired by what I was learning from The Honorable Minister. These poems were written between 1981 and 2000. Thus, 19 years of expressing what I was learning through poetry. In other words, I turned my understanding of The Minister's words into poetry. These poems allowed me to release all of my thoughts and express my emotions. My poetry is my therapy.
