IN man's attempt to state the nature of the substratum of the universe, it has been common in the past to describe the One Life as a Person. This Personality of God is often imaged as having one attribute of man's physical nature, which is breathing. In the Hindu tradition, the word Atman is from a root meaning "to breathe," and a verse in the Rig Veda describes the One as breathing. Turning westwards, the phrase "Spirit of God" is constant in Judaism and Christianity, the word "spirit" coming from a Latin root signifying breathing.
